FTC v. Microsoft Case Reveals Nintendo’s Billion-Dollar Domination Over PlayStation And Xbox In Console Revenues

Microsoft‘s $69 billion deal to take over Activision Blizzard is a hot topic right now. The deal is the reason for Microsoft’s current issues with FTC, as the latter is trying to block the said deal. Because Microsoft’s accession over Activision Blizzard is thought to change the gaming scene in a revolutionary way. This feud brought many interesting news for the fans making them almost baffled. 

Meanwhile, Sony took a dedicated approach to object to this deal. They feared Microsoft’s deal might turn their star game Call of Duty into an Xbox exclusive. In addition, more interesting news about Nintendo‘s console publishing revenue.

Apart from Call of Duty, FTC v. Microsoft’s trial brought amusing statistics on Nintendo’s console publishing revenue. Further data has confirmed Nintendo’s rule over this segment. Microsoft took a pretty deep attempt to bring Nintendo’s sale statistics. It was to sabotage the high-performance relevant market of the Federal Trade Commission.

Additionally, Nintendo appeared as one of the best-selling consoles with Switch’s impact on PlayStation and Xbox. Economist Dr. Liz and Reporter Micheal Ashton gave their testimonies about Nintendo’s success in the console publishing segment. Data confirmed that Nintendo is the highest publishing revenues with a $3.8 billion lead over Sony and Xbox.

In Dr. Bailey’s words- “There’s essentially 3 sources of hardware on which gaming happens. Mobile is the largest, it’s about 70%, what I’m showing here is global gaming revenue by 2021. About $150 billion, about 70%. PC gaming is about $33 billion, console gaming at $28 billion.”

However, this data included only revenue collected from first-party games with console market sales. Along with Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One’s Gen 8 data with PlayStation 5 and Xbox X/S Series’s Gen 9 data are subjected in the list. Further, Xbox was revealed to hold less than 1 % of the revenues in the mobile-gaming market.

Nintendo leads the market 

This FTC v. Microsoft trial brought many out-of-the-box facts about the gaming industry. Nintendo’s rule on the console publishing segment appeared pretty interesting. Nintendo held an 18.5 % market share in the console game publishing segment. Switch’s significant effect on Xbox and PlayStation regarding subscription offers helped in understanding the potential of the industry.

It revealed Activision Blizzard’s fifth position in console gaming with a 7.4% market share. Sony appeared in the fourth position. Xbox’s eighth position seemed pretty poor performance with a 4.9% share.
