How was the Bloater costume in The Last of Us show made?
According to Variety, Barrie Gower, a four-time Emmy winner, is the prosthetics designing genius behind some of the most iconic creatures in recent pop culture, including the “bloater” from The Last of Us. But what is actually fascinating is the entire process of how the humongous creature was made, and how the person behind the skin managed to pull the role of the fearsome creature so amazingly.

The bloater, played by Adam Basil, a 6’6″ UK stuntman who has worked on huge projects like the Game of Thrones, had to do a lot of preparation before he could actually come in front of the camera. According to the report by Variety, “the entire bloater suit weighed 40 kilograms or more, roughly 88 pounds.” This means that he and the costume team had to spend a lot of time finalizing the look of the fungal monster.

To add to the challenge of the costume designing department, there were 10-15 more stunt performers dressed in clicker costumes and 40-60 infected characters to be made up. It took the team five to six hours to finish all the makeup, and the process would start around 3 or 4 PM to begin shooting at 9 PM since the clicker attack takes place at night.

Fans were left awestruck upon hearing this information
Notably, this was also the reason why the fans of the show were really excited about it. Although CGI is the norm nowadays, fans were awestruck by the costume’s realism and how it enhanced the fear level while one watches the particular minutes from the episode.
Glad they actually used a suit and not cgi. Made it more terrifying, and he was nice to take of the mask to make Keivonn feel at ease

It’s crazy how carefully this show was made. Basically 90% of other shows would put a shitty CGI monster.
