Throughout God of War: Ragnarok, Thor is depicted as a puppet of Odin, painting a very sad picture for him. But his fighting sense in the game is no joke. Thor has proven himself to be a worthy adversary to Kratos, with their battle being one of the hardest to complete for players.

But Kratos got an unknown advantage over the Norse Aesir God of Thunder. And this power-up was useful in defeating the penultimate boss, Thor.

Thor’s wounds did not heal after the battles with Kratos in God of War

In God of War: Ragnarok, the Aesir gods were notorious for healing quickly. This gift was depicted clearly by Baldur and Heimdall in the game. But when Atreus goes to Asgard to visit Odin and encounters Thor, many fans noticed something. While talking with Atreus, the wound on Thor inflicted by Kratos during the first fight was still visible. And this was a shocking fact knowing Aesir gods heal fast.

Further doubts were raised in the battle between Thor and Kratos. While the battle between them was an epic showdown, Kratos got the best of Thor because his wounds were not healing. And the reason behind that seems to be hidden in the 2018 God of War.

In the 2018 version, Kratos and Atreus visited the Lake of Nine. Jörmungandr’s (World Serpent) presence floods most of the lake and the adjacent coastlines when Kratos and Atreus first explore it. Atreus discovers a head of a statue and they row over to investigate it.

Kratos gets the upper hand against the Norse gods, thanks to this gift from Jörmungandr

Following the inscriptions on the statue, Kratos throws his Leviathan Axe into the lake. This wakes up the World Serpent, and he can be seen throwing the axe back to the boat. It is believed that Jörmungandr imbues the axe with Eitr, a poison produced only by the giant. The Eitr poison is lethal to the Norse gods.

The World Serpent first encounters Thor in Ragnarok, however, that was a completely different one from what we saw in the 2018 game. If the abovementioned theory about the axe being upgraded is true, it makes even more sense as Jörmungandr was sent back in time during that fight, ultimately becoming the Serpent that imbues the Leviathan Axe with the poison.

Thor being a Norse god was susceptible to any hits from the Leviathan Axe imbued with the Eitr poison. And this proved to be the turning point in the fight between Kratos and Thor.
