The story of God of War so far and the saga that follows:

The basic premise of the 2018 game follows the story of our beloved Greek God of War Kratos, who, after destroying Olympus, traveled to Midgard. In the Norse realm, the Kratos fell in love with a frost giant named Laufey the Just, or Faye in short, and had a son named Atreus. After the death of his wife, Kratos, along with his son Atreus, travels to the biggest mountain in all of Midgard to spread Faye’s ashes from the top.

Along his journey, the Ghost of Sparta and his son come across several characters that will also appear in the second installment of the game as well. Notably, the second installment of the game takes place three years after the events of the first event. With Atreus finally getting more refined as a warrior, Kratos has a serious clash with the Norse God of Thunder, Thor.

Freya, the mother of Baldur from the 2018 God of War, will also be one of the main antagonists in the game. Since she was an ally in the first game, it will be interesting to see how her story transpires. Apart from this, the director of the previous game, Cory Barlog said, that the God of War Ragnarok will end the Norse storyline with it. Meaning players can fight Odin in the final act of the game.

Additionally, the game also features the legendary Fimbulwinter as the setting for the game. Thus, Kratos might be migrating to someplace warmer for the next game, while Atreus, who is a frost giant by blood, will transform into Loki as hinted in the final act of the first game.

Characters: Friends and Foes

According to the reports and the trailer, God of War Ragnarok will feature some more additions to the game who might bring some perks and quests along with them. But before that, let’s take a look at all the characters that might feature from the previous game.

  1. Freya: One of the most obvious characters from the last game, Freya can be found attacking Kratos in the trailer, hinting that she might be looking for revenge on her son’s death.
  2. Brok and Sindri: The Huldra Brothers. They helped Kratos and Atreus in between missions to upgrade their weapons and armor.
  3. Jörmungandr: Jörmungandr, popularly known as the World serpent, is the protector of Midgard from Thor to prevent Ragnarok from happening.

  4. Thor: Shown in the final few seconds of the first game, Thor will be one of the main antagonists of the game as his sons Módi and Magni were killed by the Ghost of Sparta in the 2018 game.
  5. Mimir: A body-less head hanging behind Kratos, Mimir is the guiding force and the master storyteller for the father-son duo.

New Characters:-

  1. Odin: Maybe the original antagonist in the entire game, Odin is the All-seeing Father and has knowledge of the world. It is very likely that Kratos and Atreus will meet Odin to know all the secrets that have been hidden from them for all this time.
  2. Fenrir: The giant wolf, said to be the son of Loki and the giantess Angrboða, is the brother of the World Serpent. It is not yet sure how the story of this giant canine will match the mythology but it is for sure one of the best allies that the duo will encounter during their travels.
  3. Tyr: The Norse God of War and a legend from the first game. In the trailers, Tyr can be seen as a captured prisoner who helps Kratos and Atreus in a better chunk of the game. It can also be speculated that Tyr, since being a giant himself, can help Atreus realize his powers to transform into Loki.
  4. Angrboða: A giantess in Mythology, Angrboða is a potential love interest for Atreus and can also be shown as a friend or caretaker for Fenrir.
  5. Durlin: Durlin is another new character in God of War Ragnarok. He is a mysterious figure who hasn’t been detailed too much yet.

Combats and Weapons System in God of War Ragnarok

Although not much is disclosed about the weapon system, it seems as if the developers wanted to try something new. So it is circulating around the internet that the new key mapping will have an extra feature added to the Triangle Button in the PlayStation 4 and 5 controllers. Apparently, just like in the previous game, players can call back the Leviathan Axe with a single press, while also allowing for different attack styles for different weapons.

Notably, Atreus will be a major component of the combat system as he can be upgraded and turned into a much more lethal weapon than any actual weapon in the game. Apart from this, there are some other notable weapons added to the game:-

Returning Weapons

  1. Leviathan Axe: The trusted frost axe from the previous game returns yet again with more upgrades this time.
  2. Blades of Chaos: There is no God of War without the Blades of Chaos, thus this time it returns with more fire and more upgrades than the previous game as well.
  3. Guardian Shield: Kratos also possesses defense weapons, such as the retractable Guardian Shield, which may protect him from incoming attacks.
  4. Talon Bow: Atreus will aid Kratos during battles by using his Talon Bow to harm, stun, or divert foes.

New Weapons

  1. The Dauntless: The Dauntless Shield is designed to be utilized in counterattacks and parries, though not much is still known about the shield as of yet.
  2. Stonewall Shields: The Stonewall Shield is intended to be employed in a more tank-like playstyle in which you block assaults to collect enemy energy before releasing it back at them.

Along with this, there will be a number of stones to collect and apply to the weapons to make them even more effective during combat.
