Hasan Piker Revisits Traumatic Past From His Childhood When He Lived in Turkey and Had to Experience a 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Back in 1999

Recently on 6th February 2023, both Turkey and Syria were hit by a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake which caused widespread damage and claimed the lives of thousands of people. The quake struck the city of Kahramanmaras, also known as Marash, and it is still unclear how many people have been affected by the tragedy.

As soon as news of the earthquake broke, the Turkish-American political commentator Hasan Piker sprang into action. But along with starting a fundraiser to aid the victims of the earthquake, it seems that he also had a traumatic experience as a child when he himself survived a 7.6 scale earthquake back in 1999.

In his recent stream, Hasan Piker revealed that he has been personally affected by the disaster. According to him, he survived the massive earthquake in Istanbul, Turkey in 1999, which claimed the lives of 17,000 people, and he has spoken out about the devastating impact of the disaster on the country.

“Things are not fine overall in Turkey, okay? They’re not. They’re really bad,” said Hasan. “I know that because I personally survived alongside my family the massive earthquake in Istanbul in 1999. Now, I saw that Devastation of the city first, and 17 000 people died in 1999…I don’t really remember too much of it because it was like really traumatic.”

Before starting the full coverage of the entire Turkey earthquake incident, however, Hasan Piker made sure to inform his fans that his family, who are currently living in the country, is absolutely safe.

“No, I do not have family in the region even though technically my grandfather’s, my own mother’s side is from Kiris. So it is technically in that area of devastation, absolutely. But I do not have any immediate relatives in the region so no,” said Hasan. “I’ve been getting a lot of people asking me you know, What’s going on? What’s happening? Do you have family out there you know? Thank you for your well wishes, but I’m fine. My family’s fine. They’re in Istanbul.”

Hasan has been rallying support for the victims of the earthquake, using his platform to raise awareness of the crisis and coordinate efforts to provide aid. He and his team have created a streamlined process for foreign donors to easily fund charities that can provide fast relief to those in need. Hasan said, “We are actively working on creating a streamlined process so that foreign donators can easily fund @ahbap along numerous other ngos that provide fast relief in turkey,”.

The earthquake in Turkey is a tragedy of enormous proportions, and the road to recovery will be long and difficult. However, with the support of people like Hasan and countless others who are working to help those in need, the country can begin to heal and rebuild.
