The rivalry between companies is not a new thing. Apart from companies, fans too compete over numbers to find whether a certain console is superior or not. Consoles like PlayStation, Nintendo, etc. are always in the fray to sell more units to earn liking as well as profit.

These numbers can sometimes get overwhelming, as all these companies are constantly expanding their business. As in a recent tweet thread, Mat Piscatella, a leading industry analyst, gave some shocking data to the fans.

Who is better in numbers, PlayStation or Switch?

Well, PlayStation and Nintendo both have their own areas of competence in the industry. On one side, Nintendo is better at selling more products than Sony, but on the other, PlayStation made more money.

According to Piscatella, PlayStation 5 generated the highest dollar sales amongst video game hardware platforms in both June and the first half of the calendar 2022. While Switch led both time periods in unit sales.

He also added that during June, PlayStation 5 dollar sales experienced double-digit percentage growth when compared to a year ago. Similarly, the Switch launch of Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles pushed the title to #14 on all the platforms.

It also became the best-selling title in June, while also placing 10th on Nintendo Switch. This eventually added to Nintendo sales, as the users were extremely eager to get their hands on the game. 

The rise, the fall, and the negligence

Piscatella also mentions data about the recent decline in the gaming industry. With only a few games performing well, others are still lagging behind. He tweeted that Overwatch returned to the top 20 best-selling titles chart for the first time since October 2019, ranking 5th overall. This jump was driven by the release of the Overwatch 2 Beta on June 28th.

On the other hand, Elden Ring is repeated as the best-selling game of the month, and it remains the same in the year 2022 to date. Elden Ring has placed first in dollar sales in four of its first five months in the market. Elden Ring ranks among the top 10 best-selling premium games in the U.S. market of all-time (dollar sales).

He also added further that the cooling of the U.S. mobile game market slowed in June, with consumer spending down 10.7% year-over-year compared to about 12.6% in May. The decline continues to be driven largely by Google Play; in fact, Apple’s App Store saw positive YoY growth, albeit minimal at +0.16%, for the first time since February of this year.

Whatever the figures may indicate, it is clear that the industry is undergoing change. However, it can be difficult to determine if the change is for the better or whether certain other issues are still being neglected.
