Many fans are well aware of the video game curse. However, this year seems to have broken it following the valiant efforts of titles like The Last of Us and Super Mario Bros. Still, numerous movie stars are hesitant to pick video game adaptations as their next project. And this curse also looms over the upcoming Gran Turismo movie.

In spite of all this, Stranger Things fame actor David Harbour has placed his bets on the upcoming video game adaptation. Furthermore, he believes the movie will succeed mostly due to the approach in which the movie is being made.

What made Harbour take this risk is the influence Gran Turismo had on the title character of the movie. The real-life movie is based on Jann Mardenborough, a Gran Turismo player, and his journey to becoming a real-life racecar driver.

Harbour is also happy with the way the movie is turning out. In an interview with IGN, he said, “I’m really happy with the approach that they took to this, because I think we all know, unfortunately – I mean, it’s just a thing – video game movies don’t work.” He believes part of the reason video game movies flop is due to viewer expectations.

In video games, players control the character. But when they see a team of actors and directors setting the story for characters, they mostly do not agree with the story. They want to carve that story themselves. But he thinks this won’t be the case for this movie.

Although the movie is not directly based on the long-running series, Harbour has still praised the game. He has stated the video game is still a very big part of the movie and the story would not progress if the game is not mentioned in the movie.

“I mean, it’s about a guy who played video games very intensely, and then took that video game experience and put it on the track. It really becomes, to me, like a great sports movie,” he said. The movie has a released date of August 11.
