Immortality isn’t a game
Recently, you would have come across several games that use the ARG method to convince their players that they are not a game but rather a piece of real software used by real people, but later forgotten. One such example of this type of game is Inscryption. A brilliantly crafted game that doesn’t follow the conventional gameplay method, but rather uses its uniqueness to differentiate itself from all other games.

Immortality, more or less, does the same, but in a much more gory fashion. The game has a separate Content Warning tab on the opening screen itself that tells players that the game contains a lot of explicit content. But despite all this, there is a mysterious soundtrack and a lady from the 1970s & 80s that gives out a sense of mystery.
While navigating through the game, you will also find that the game is actually divided into several segments, trying to tell a story of a woman. On further investigation, you will find out that the game is actually real-life footage of a would-be actress Marissa Marcel, who mysteriously disappeared and was never found.

Thus, the question arises if the game is just another mystery-solving game, why is it nominated for the game of the year? Well, because it’s a sort of experiment, combining film direction, acting, and storytelling.
Immortality is an experimental film that uses the cover of a game to explore the hidden details of it. But a good story always has a good ending, thus if you think that the game is just about searching for a disappeared movie star, then think again, you might be wrong all along.
