Halo Infinite’s multiplayer launched back in December 2021 and has seen tremendous success since. In 2022, the game is seeing an average player count of about 47,335, which, even though is far removed from its initial peak of 102,000 active players, is still greater than the average player count of Battlefield 2042, as reported by Charlie Intel.

However, the game mode ‘Big Team Battle’ has been unplayable for many players since December. Players are facing issues loading into matches, and it only becomes worse for larger groups.

Another BTB update looms on the horizon for Halo Infinite

A hotfix for BTB was released in January 2022, meant to improve matchmaking and minor updates to oddball. Although, it has since fallen short of that goal. The update only resulted in minor improvements and the BTB matchmaking issue still persists at large. Halo community director Brian Jarrard stated on Twitter:

“Well, damn… today’s BTB hotfix does not appear to be the outcome we expected.”, and “…we’re sorry this didn’t quite get the job done. Work continues.”

Subsequently, on Thursday February 3, John Junyszek, a senior community manager at 343 Industries, took to Twitter to announce an update regarding BTB.

John stated that an update for BTB is ready and it would launch on February 4. But the tweet has met heavy scrutiny on the internet as fans struggle to believe that this update would fare any better than the last.

What can players expect from the update?

The general audience has met the announcement with notable skepticism. Some believe the update might actually break more than it fixes even before they download it. However, according to an update on the Halo Waypoint website by Junyszek, the team has used the telemetry data from the January 19 hot fix to build the update.

“Using the telemetry we received from the hotfix on January 19, we were able to make a new build with an update that we believe should address the core issue impacting the BTB playlist. The studio ran a successful playtest today and plans to send it off for certification on Monday. After it’s sent off, it will take some time to go through the certification process and to find out if it’s approved. Once it’s approved, we’ll begin preparing to release it to the public…”

This update went up on January 28, and hints at the possibility of building on its predecessor’s work as it resolves the matchmaking issue. But players would have to download the patch on February 4 to find out for if they can finally hop into Big Team Battle with their friends.
