Now looking like Electronic Arts is thinking about giving players monetary freedom too by giving the game free of cost. If the Sims 5 game launches with a free-to-play model, it will join the ranks of popular games like Fortnite and Rocket League. Additionally, it will give EA a chance to expand the user base of this game.

A job listing from EA suggests Sims 5 is going to be free-to-play

Recently, EA and Maxis put out an opening for the Head of Monetization and Marketplace for Project Rene (Sims 5). This title announced in October 2022 has caught the eyes of casual gaming fans. The listing mentioned that the candidate will “own pricing of all content in this free-to-enter game”. The wording for this job post has surprised many fans, which was first spotted by Sims Community.

The desired candidate will also “own Project Rene’s in-game marketplace of content and UGC (free and paid), and manage a data-informed player-centric player purchase journey – maximizing value to players, optimizing player spend patterns, and minimizing player churn”. This implies EA is looking to create a more expansive marketplace than Sims 4. Furthermore, with Sims 4 going free-to-play last year, this was the first mention of the sequel being free-to-play too.

Making free-to-play titles for the Sims series is a commendable approach from EA. This series works well if there is a large user base playing it, and using the monetization model of titles like Fortnite and Rocket League grants it a large user base. Looking at the freedom this title offers, it is likely Sims 5, if free to play, will perform well with casual gaming fans looking for a free game.
