Latest Sonic Movie Dethrones Bruce Almighty to Become Jim Carrey’s Biggest Opening Yet

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has opened at the box office in perfect style, as the movie just created history in the United States. The second installment in the franchise based on the iconic gaming saga has registered huge earnings domestically.

In case anyone missed it, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has made a stellar debut by grossing over $70 million. When compared to the first Sonic film, these figures are just spectacular, to say the least.

The first entry in the movie series was released in 2020 and became a smash hit instantly. Following its great success, Sega began working on the second installment as well.

Fast forward to 2022 and here is everyone witnessing the record opening of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. As reported by GamesRadar, the film made around $71 million in the US in its first week. It’s a big jump of 22 percent in comparison to the original entry that made $58 million on the opening weekend.

Moreover, it’s also actor Jim Carrey‘s biggest domestic opener as well, just edging out his previous best in 2003’s Bruce Almighty. That film earned around $68 million almost two decades ago.

Here is what the Paramount Theatrical Distribution boss Chris Aronson had to say about the movie’s monstrous performance:

“The filmmakers did an amazing job of crafting a film that is both in service of Sonic’s legions of fans as well as the general and family audience.”

Apart from Jim Carrey, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 stars Ben Schwartz who returns as the voice actor for the furry speedster. Other cast members are James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Natasha Rothwell, and Adam Pally. Shemar Moore, Lee Majdoub, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey are also featured in key roles.

The movie is now playing in theaters worldwide.

In other news, gaming fans are currently waiting for the next major installment in the beloved saga with Sonic Frontiers. It’s the upcoming title in the ever-expanding franchise and will arrive later this year. Upon its launch, it will be available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and also the Nintendo Switch.
