YouTube veteran and theorist Matthew Patrick aka MatPat confessed how Smosh’s downfall helped him understand how to sell his channels successfully. In a recent interview with a former Smosh member and one of the organization’s co-founders, Anthony Padilla, Mat shared how he managed to restrain himself from repeating their mistake.

Being on the platform for years, MatPat and his brand have garnered quite a big following and a reputation in the online community. But as his enterprise expanded in enormous proportions, the responsibility of running a successful business alongside maintaining a healthy relationship with his family was becoming too overwhelming for him and his team. They had no option but to give the reins of his channels to someone else and supervise everything from the back.

All the theorist channels run by Mat and the team, including The Game Theorists, GT Live, The Food Theorists, and The Film Theorists, are sold off to a startup company named Lunar X. This company will be acting as the “investment partner and production support company.” While MatPat will still run the show upfront, behind the scenes, his contributions will be limited to his role as a ‘consultant’.

“At the end of the day, all decisions are made. I’m a consultant, I’m an advisor. I am there to help out as much as I can,” said Mat about his current contributions to the channels. Mat refused to mention the price on which he settled to bid his brands. All he said was, “We made sure it was the price we were happy with. It was everything we were hoping to get out of it. And we made sure our team was taken care of in the process.”

In the interview with Anthony Padilla, MatPat shared how Anthony’s experience with selling Smosh helped him understand what to look for and learn from their mistakes, “Learning the lessons from you and your experience was so important in all the negotiations we made that we had going in.”

Anthony expressed his gratitude for getting to be an example that will help generations of content creators. He recounted how the shifting tides of YouTube intimidated him and his team members to sell off their channel for a more steady future.

Will The Game Theorists have the same fate as Smosh?

Unfortunately, this decision had huge repercussions as the new management failed to respect the brand’s ethics, and almost exhausted the team members, which led to the founders Ian and Anthony parting ways with their own creation. This downfall of Smosh became a guiding light for many, including Mat.

While talking about how they stopped the same disaster from happening to The Game Theorist, Mat said, “We made sure contractually that our team is protected… We ensure that Steph (Mat’s wife and co-owner Stephanie Clair) and I are the COO and CEO of the company.” Mat also shared how the vision that Lunar X presented to them was very positive.

According to him, unlike the other interested companies in the past, Lunar X didn’t want to buy and completely rebrand the company. Instead, they respected the expertise of the original team. According to MatPat, “They are looking to optimize, streamline what we do rather than us sliding into a larger company.”
