From a distance, it may look like The Last of Us series is all about the grim dark drama set in a post-apocalyptic world filled with horrors. And to some extent, it is. But one of the most crucial parts of the TLOU is the bond that the main characters, Joel and Ellie, share with each other. Their connection and love are what drive the story forward. 

Joel and Ellie are one of the most unlikely father-daughter-like duos in modern media. Their relationship may not be tied to the blood, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t make them spill the blood of others. Both parts of the game focus on their journey, driven by their bond. The first focuses on a journey to protect the other on a mission for revenge.

The relationship between Joel and Ellie is probably the most important aspect of the plot. That is why the weight was very heavy on the actors’ shoulders to portray the duo’s chemistry as naturally as they can. Fortunately, both Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey knew each other from the sets of their previous HBO production, Game of Thrones.

But the irony was, even though they knew each other, they never get to talk or meet before The Last of Us. Talking about their first meetup Bella shared, “We met for the first time just as I was getting my haircut and he just came off the set and it was like a very brief meeting, we didn’t have like time to know each other but yeah the chemistry it was like immediately, this Bond-like that unspoken connection we’re both about to embark on this huge journey together…”

Bella continued, she was a little skeptical at first because she had to fly to Canada with Pedro, who she just met, and spend a year there for the shoot. Pedro shared how the little things helped build their bond. He said, “I feel like there was all of this kind of like little unspoken relationship developing even before we got to Canada. Like you know, we started following each other on Instagram and things, like sending little signals to one another to you know shyly but the excitement and the anticipation was obviously so clear.”

These small steps and actions inevitably bloomed into a beautiful relationship between the actors, which may get to be portrayed in the HBO Max series as they will embark on tier journey as Father-Daughter in the grim world of Last of Us, releasing on January 15, 2023.
