Bungie’s titles rarely disappoint fans, and much to the surprise of fans, PlayStation Showcase 2023 saw them reveal a new project Marathon. Marathon was a fan-favorite that was discontinued years ago. With the trailer of the PvP shooter demonstrated to fans, the community assumed Bungie’s hands full with the project.

Speculation among the gaming community says otherwise. It seems that Bungie may have a secret project in the works. A Reddit post made rounds in the gaming community about job postings from Bungie. Subsequently, gamers speculated on the job description as part of a new game under development from Bungie!

Game development is a process that requires all hands on deck, meaning a large group of people working on the project is important. This makes recruitment drives for developers such as Bungie a crucial factor when it comes to game development.

Bungie seemingly in the early stages of working on new IP (not Marathon), seems to be a bit of a departure from prior games they’ve made but still GaaS.

These job postings usually indicate of a new game being under development. According to the post made on Reddit and the job posting on Bungie’s website, positions are open within the Art, Engineering, and Testing departments.

As Reddit users made their way through these posts, fans noticed certain common characteristics. The posts gave importance to work experience with Unreal Engine and led to speculation about the new game’s development taking place under Unreal Engine. What’s more fascinating is that Bungie has built shooters such as Destiny on its own Tiger Engine before.

Destiny 2 Players Exploit the Game Hilariously by Turning 2-Week Community Challenge Into a Day’s Work

In 2019, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons spoke of plans to release a non-Destiny IP by 2025. He said, “So, by 2025 we have a pretty specific path to make sure we transform Destiny and that we have other franchises within the marketplace.” The speculation was fueled by Bungie’s trademark deals. Back in 2018, Bungie filed for a trademark for the name ‘Matter’. With more hands on deck, it could be possible that Bungie is developing a shooter called Matter.

Speculations for the upcoming untitled game

With these job postings, a title also seems to be in the works. The community has rumors circulating of the game being a third-person shooter featuring whimsical, lighthearted characters within the PvP genre. Bungie’s expertise lies in this field, with titles like Destiny and Marathon.

The job description states, “Are you on a mission to create games that bond players together into deeply invested communities? Would you like to work on something comedic AND action-packed with lighthearted and whimsical characters?”

The post for the Engineering department featured a similar description. “Would you like to work on a new IP and new genre at Bungie that combines amazing action feel with lighthearted and whimsical characters? Are you excited to work on joyful PvP combat and action gameplay?”

However, as a Reddit user points out, these job openings do not confirm new titles. The recruitment for game development is an early stage in the process. Looking at how most projects end up canceled, it may not be a surprise if this untitled game faces the same fate. Time will tell if Bungie makes good on this game and if it makes it through development.
