Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, what can we say about this game that has not been said before? The game sold 2.5 million units in the opening 24 hours and swung into the 90s on Metacritic, already being tipped for this year’s GOTY at the upcoming TGA (The Game Awards). But while Spider-Man 2 is only getting better with time, Sony seems to have hit a bump.

Sony released its Financial Reports for the second quarter up to September 30. Upon digging into the reports, there have been some interesting revelations about the state of the PlayStation and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. While Spider-Man 2 is soaring, Sony’s profits have taken a hit.

The recent report from Sony discloses that the company has managed to sell 46.6 million units as of September 30th. This number might seem a large sum, but when compared to the PS4’s 117.2 million units sold, it pales in comparison. It’s clear that the PlayStation 5 still has some catching up to do.

The company also disclosed that in the last quarter, the PlayStation brand has suffered a drop in its profit by 29%. This decline was influenced by higher expenses and weaker sales of image sensors, particularly in the North American market. The impact of a strike in the movie sector offset the gains derived from a favorable exchange rate.

According to the report, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is pushing the company towards a brighter future with 5 million copies of the game already sold in just 11 days of its release. This has kept Sony hopeful for the future considering that the game has just been out for 2 weeks now. The exclusivity of the game has pushed hundreds of players to buy a brand new console to play the game.

It was recorded that between July- September, Sony sold 4.9 million units of the PlayStation 5. Compared to the 3.3 million units sold during the first quarter, this is a huge step up. Sony generated a $1.74 billion profit for the second quarter but fell short of the estimated $2.8 billion.

Engadget has reported that Sony has 16.8 million units to sell to meet its 25 million target. Interestingly, Sony has maintained their stance with respect to their goal of selling 25 million units this fiscal year. And it’s clear what steps Sony is taking.

Unlike the initial years of launch, the PS5 is fully stocked. As reported by CNBC, Eric Lempel, Sony’s head of business, previously talked about their PS5 sales goals, when he said, “This holiday season is the first holiday season we will be fully stocked on PlayStation 5 in every geography.” He also talked about the supply shortage in its early years. He stated, “We suffered from the same supply chain issues that everybody was dealing with. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to deliver PS5 to ever consumer that wanted one.” With the stock issues behind, Sony also wants to clear current stock to make way for the PS5 slim. With the stock issues behind and success of Spider-Man 2, they remain optimistic about meeting their PS5 sales target.

Another game that did well was Demon’s Souls, which sold 1.4 million units within the first year of its release. The only game that has recorded sales of under a million copies was Returnal which did 0.56 million copies.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart sold 1.1 million units within just 38 days of release. On the other hand, Sony had great success with God of War Ragnarök. By January 22, 2023, the game sold 11 million units, and an additional 2.5 million units by October 20, 2023.
