“Microsoft Would Probably Not Shoot Itself in the Foot” – European Commission Reveals Why the Xbox Maker Won’t Block Call of Duty on PlayStation

While the record-breaking deal between Microsoft and Activision is facing many hurdles, it has recently received a new hope from the European Commission. In case anyone missed keeping track of events, the competition regulator had approved the merger between the Xbox maker and the Call of Duty publisher last week.
Expanding on its decision, EC recently revealed a detailed explanation on why it has no concerns over the $68.7 billion deal. The regulatory body has mentioned a big reason for why Microsoft won’t try to make Call of Duty exclusive to Xbox. And that the action franchise will continue to be available on other platforms, especially the PlayStation.

In a press release, EC mentioned that “the Microsoft/Activision merger – with appropriate remedies – is not only compatible with the Single Market, but in fact represents a positive development.” In other words, it won’t cause any hindrance to the market competition. Instead, it will bring more gamers together while also benefiting a lot of people involved in game development.

Presenting the most important point, the Election Commission revealed that Microsoft and Call of Duty publisher‘s market share in the Europe is quite low. It’s only due to certain categories, like shooter games, that it tends to go above 20 percent. But when it comes to consoles, Sony is ahead of the Xbox maker as it sells “about 4 times more PlayStations than Microsoft sells Xboxs”.

That’s also the main reason why Microsoft won’t possibly consider removing Call of Duty from Sony’s consoles in the future. “Microsoft would probably not shoot itself in the foot by stopping sales of Call of Duty games to the much larger PlayStation player base.”
Well that’s a valid point to consider. As of now, the future for the proposed acquisition looks good right. Along with the EC, it was also recently approved by China’s competition regulator.
