Call of Duty is one of the most well-known gaming IPs in the world. So much so that its brand has become synonymous with the first-person-shooter genre. Without a doubt, the franchise clearly has an influence over other rivals that try to replicate the experience it offers. But such is the impact of Activision’s series that it has managed to accumulate a huge fanbase of millions of players for nearly two decades now.

However, sometimes witnessing constant success can turn out to be harmful. It can be said in the case of the Call of Duty publisher. That’s because the ongoing situation regarding its offerings is not so good. To be precise, the franchise has gone through a rough patch in the last four years. The games released by the publisher have barely managed to impress the loyal fans of the iconic saga. The current entry in Modern Warfare II is a clear example in order to understand what’s been going on. Interestingly, this is the game which was overly hyped by the makers months before its debut in 2022. To be precise, it was guaranteed to be nothing less than a spectacle. But that wasn’t the case at all, when it eventually made its awaited debut last year.

It was nearly a year ago when the gaming industry was filled with the unending buzz for MWII. Most of the credit for that goes to a solid marketing campaign by the makers. They didn’t leave any stone unturned in making players believe that they were going to witness something out of this world.

The confidence of Activision was also quite high for Modern Warfare II. So much so that the publisher even called it the “most advanced experience in franchise history” way before its launch. This was during the reveal of the company’s financial results for Q1 in April 2022. Here’s an excerpt from the official blog:

“This year’s Call of Duty is a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare®, the most successful Call of Duty title to date, and will be the most advanced experience in franchise history. The new free-to-play Warzone experience, which is built from the ground-up alongside the premium game, features groundbreaking innovations to be revealed later this year.”

But did it succeed in offering a superior, highly advanced experience? Probably not. That’s due to the majority of reactions Modern Warfare II has received since its launch. In the last few months, most of the fans have expressed their disappointment for the game. From bugs and annoying new mechanisms to SBMM and hacking, there have been tons of issues to say the least.

All things considered, the promise made by Activision hasn’t been fulfilled. At least that’s been the case for the past few months. However, it’s never too late to make a good comeback. Seems like the publisher has begun to work on making the ongoing installment truly the best Call of Duty release in the series. Recent reveals including brand new maps and returning modes for the upcoming Season 2 update are a clear indication of a positive change.
