After a lot of anticipation and hype, Netflix finally revealed that the academy award nominated writer, who is best known for his works in the 2021 masterclass Dune and Marvel’s beloved superhero movie, Doctor Strange, will be working for the upcoming Gears of War feature film adaptation for the streaming platform.
Although the fans rejoiced after the fact, many became vocal about the cast. The community explicitly wants their favorite actor, Dave Bautista, to play the character of Marcus. After the massive success of HBO’s The Last of Us, some fans advised that Netflix should learn from its competitors and hire the people behind the game to work on the adaptation.

Dune writer joins Gears of War Netflix adaptation
One of the most influential and successful franchises in gaming history, Gears of War is getting its own movie. Being such a huge title, with a massive community of protective fans, Netflix doesn’t want to take any chances. This is why one of the most acclaimed writers in the industry, Jon Spaihts, is hired for the development.
“‘Gears of War’ is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” said Spaihts, in a conversation with Variety. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
Back in November 2022, Netflix announced a partnership with The Coalition which will allow them to adapt the “Gears of War” universe. Netflix is planning to establish the universe with a feature-length movie and then continue the saga and explore new avenues with an adult animation series.

The story of Gears of War revolves around a world that is on the brink of collapse after almost getting completely ravaged by an invading race of monstrous Locust aliens. A ragtag fireteam known as Delta Squad, led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, takes things in their hands as they fight as humanity’s last hope.
Fans’ reaction to the game’s movie adaptation
After the announcement, the first thing fans demanded was to cast the Guardians of the Galaxy actor, Dave Bautista, as the main protagonist, Marcus Fenix. Bautista himself has expressed interest in the role in many instances. The community also advised Netflix should hire original individuals, just like in the Last of Us.
