What does it mean for Conan?

Conan the Barbarian featured in two games, Age of Conan and Conan Exiles. While the former was fairly successful, Exiles was infamous for all the wrong reasons. But this did not hinder any plans by Funcom and Cabinet for the barbaric sword-wielding character.

Talking about the plans for all the IPs, CEO of Cabinet Group, Fredrik Malmberg said“Conan is the jewel in the crown, but we probably have I’d say 30 to 50 characters that we could exploit,”.

Conan the Barbarian is arguably the most famous work of late author Robert E. Howard. The character has had three films to his name: Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, and a remake of Conan the Barbarian (2011).

The first two blockbusters starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the barbarian and reached exceptional heights in the box office. On the other hand, the remake of 2011 starring “Aquaman” Jason Momoa struggled to break even, resulting in a flop.

Funcom’s Plans for the Years Ahead

Funcom along with Cabinet think that Kane, Mutant, and the others could reach similar heights with the right approach. CEO of Funcom, Rui Casias, said, “It’s not just about Conan… the other characters we can bring to life will feel a lot more attention with the backing we have and the ability we have to push them”.

Applauding Fortnite’s work in bringing licensed characters to the game, Malmberg points out they can one-up Epic Games’ idea. The idea of a universe as a game seemed much more appealing to the devs. Casias hinting at their plans stated, “We are currently overseeing the development of an unannounced game which will combine many of the characters in the Robert E. Howard universe.”.

With the brand new acquisition and a bunch of ideas, let’s just hope the devs take it slow. Hopefully, the games won’t turn out to be similar to Exiles’ case, nor shouldn’t they be anything like the next Schwarzenegger movie; always planned, but later dropped.
