The leaked banner revealed that Codename Red is set in Japan, marking a significant departure from previous Assassin’s Creed settings. While the upcoming game had many rumors surrounding the new protagonists, the recent leak gives fans more information.

This news comes in from the writer of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Pierre Boudreau. Many fans and critics noticed when he updated a portion of the game’s key art on his LinkedIn banner. This is where the confirmation for a female protagonist comes to light. The name of the female protagonist in Codename Red is rumored to be NAOÉ/NAOI. The character’s story revolves around seeking revenge against the Templars for killing her father. Which led her to join the Shinobi.

Developers from Ubisoft Bordeaux, known for their work on Mirage, are transitioning to work on Codename Red. The developers claim that the game is fully playable at the point of this information’s release, although much remains unannounced. Ubisoft is expected to reveal more details about the game early in 2024, including the release date.

Codename Red is the last game in the Assassin’s Creed series to follow the direction introduced in Assassin’s Creed Origins, which shifted towards a more fantasy RPG approach, contrasting with the original stealth style. The game’s launch is targeting the holidays in 2024, although it might get delayed to 2025. Ubisoft’s Business Development and Brand Partnership teams have been seeking sponsorship partners, and Insider Gaming reported a Holiday season 2024 window, which is still subject to change.

 

The rumors state that Codename Red is expected to receive years of post-launch support and additional content. It will also coexist with another project called Codename Hexe. Ubisoft Quebec, the same studio that worked on Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, is developing the game.

In the upcoming game, Ubisoft has worked on not one, but two different protagonists. While one is a female protagonist, as mentioned above, the other is an African male Samurai who is likely the historical warrior Yasuke. Yasuke lived sometime after 1582CE, during the Azuchi-Momoyama era.

Codename Red is expected to bring back the stealth element, featuring a destructible environment. Players will have the ability to hide the bodies of victims, hide in tall grass, and extinguish torches to hide in the shadows while employing various strategies to avoid detection.
