Having famous faces in games can’t guarantee a hit, as we saw the Cyberpunk 2077 fail despite having the superstar, Keanu Reeves. In the past, a famous movie-based game didn’t witness any success despite featuring the American actress, Olivia Wilde, leading Disney to shut down the game’s developing studio.

Tron Evolution was an action-adventure game developed by Popaganda Games while published under the banners of Disney Interactive. The game’s plot was like a bridge between the two films. So the movie’s cast members were also part of the game.

It was also the first video game appearance for Olivia Wilde. And she also raised the curtains over the game at the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards. But who knew this game wouldn’t be as successful as the movie?

Why did Disney shut down Propaganda Games?

Propaganda Games was a Canadian video game developing company established in 2005. In the same year, Disney bought the company and wanted to enter the video game market. So, Tron Evolution was the doorway for Disney to establish itself in the video game industry.

However, the 2010 action-adventure game, failed to meet Disney’s titanic expectations. Fans and critics showered the game with criticism as they complained about it being repetitive and dull. Although some praised the game for its visuals and acting as a bridge between the two movies.

Ultimately, the game failed as a critical and commercial disappointment, selling only 190,755 copies in North America. Disney now has an estimated net worth of $202 billion and would have expected a higher amount to succeed in the video game market.

But this game’s failure led to enormous losses for the American multinational mass media company, forcing Disney to shut down Propaganda Games. Further, closing Propaganda games also led to canceling future projects like a promising Pirates of the Caribbean game, which even had an announcement at the 2009 E3 event.

What if Tron Evolution was a colossal success?

The 2010 action-adventure game would have established Disney as a promising AAA video game company if it was a colossal hit. Further, Disney wouldn’t have shut down Propaganda Games. Instead, the developers would have gotten bigger game projects. And Disney could be more profitable than they are now.
