The Polish video game developer CD Projekt Red revealed five projects, three of which were related to the fan-favorite Witcher series. It seemed like the developers wanted to squeeze out every ounce of content from their most successful series.
There was a heads-up about CD Projekt RED working on a game separate from the new Witcher trilogy storyline. And they codenamed it “Canis Majoris.” Moreover, it would be developed by an external studio, while CD Project RED members who worked on previous Witcher titles would head them. Now, the game developers have unveiled more information about Canis Majoris.

Canis Majoris is no more a secret
The Polish developers announced their primary focus would be on the project “Polaris,” which would begin a new journey of a new character. However, there was also Canis Majoris, which had no connection to Polaris. So many thought it could be a spin-off game for the Witcher series. It might revolve around a famous character from the original game, like Ciri or Yennefer.
We're thrilled to reveal that, together with @Fools_Theory, we're working on remaking The Witcher using Unreal Engine 5 (codename: Canis Majoris)!
We want to do this right, so please be patient — it's gonna be a while until we can share more details.

But the latest revelation by the CD Projekt RED confirmed it is not a spin-off but a retelling of the original Witcher game. So, in short, Canis Majoris is the remake of The Witcher. Moreover, the external studio they shared that would work on this game is Fool’s Theory. These developers have also worked on projects like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Outriders.

Here's my take;
Don't remake W1 to today's standards with UE5.
Remake W1 and W2 together to the standards of W3 (slightly modernising the engine)1. Less time and resources required.
2. Focus more on actual sequels.
3. W3 still holds up today.
4. Accessible for all W3 fans.— Keith Bishop 🏴 (@wholly_unholy) October 26, 2022

The Witcher 1 feels unique. I really hope you stay honest and don't turn The Witcher 1 into an action RPG like TW2 and 3 made for PC's and consoles.
The combat, the UI, this game is meant to play with a MKB and that made it feel so rare and unique.

Please dont make any major changes and leave it as is. Really hate it when devs start removing thing out of fear of offending a specific group.

This is gonna be interesting. Witcher 1 is still my absolute favourite one and has one of the best atmospheres for me. Its dark and gritty and fantastically mimics not only the books but the whole setting of a world on the verge of collapsing
