One must keep in mind that none of these games were short of excellent, yet no one uttered the word GOTY. Some might have suggested that Resident Evil 4 Remake might be nominated, but that did not last very long. Then came the first masterpiece of 2023.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Setting new standards with its gameplay mechanics. Abilities offered in this game, such as ultra-hand and fuse, gave players such power that they literally broke most rules set by the developers themselves. It was such a technically unique game that even the developers of some other games could not help but appreciate the prowess of Nintendo’s developers. This was followed by another massively anticipated title.

Starfield: The game became the most-played title on Steam at launch. Developed by Bethesda, it takes the idea of RPGs developed by this developer to new levels. From building spaceships to exploring over 1000 planets, the game has everything one would look for in a space-set action adventure. Some say it has set a new standard in gaming, while others say this game has created a new class of RPGs. And speaking of, there’s another one on the way. And this will surely get the votes of all the webheads out there.

Spider-Man 2: The game that every PlayStation 5 owner has been waiting for since this console’s launch back in 2020. The game will launch in less than two weeks and is already tipped to be the best superhero game ever made. And that is saying a lot. Not only was Spiderman a brilliant game, but the entire Arkham series was too. Arkham Asylum set the tone for superhero games, which was followed up by the multi award-winning Arkham City. Some who have gotten their hands on Spider-Man 2 can confirm that developer Insomniac Games has set a new standard for superhero games in their upcoming title. And there’s no doubt about it. After all, Insomniac Games has a very good track record of developing games that are nothing short of masterpieces.

Choosing a game for each console is easy. Nintendo fans would choose Zelda, Xbox fans would go for Starfield, and PlayStation 5 fans would select Spider-Man 2. What for? As their nominations for Game of the Year 2023. And no doubt each of these three games deserves a spot on that list.

But there’s an issue here: this year, there are a bunch of Davids all ready to challenge these Goliaths. And they might have a good chance of winning, too.

But there are also some unexpected ones

While those massive games surely have some chance of winning recognition as GOTY, they are being challenged by some unexpected participants. And they have the potential to win too. It’s not a very long list, but no one can deny the fact that these games are strong contenders for the Game of the Year award.

Baldur’s Gate 3: The game has a meta score of 96! Once it saw a full release back in August, fans could not be happier. In its complete form, Baldur’s Gate 3 is too huge. Gives players hundreds of hours of playtime. There are numerous dialogue choices, as well as many romance options, and a massive world to explore with so many side quests to complete.

There hasn’t been such a CRPG that can appeal to both hardcore fans and casual gamers. However, Baldur’s Gate 3 changed that. If this game does not win GOTY, it will certainly give a tough fight. And it will be nominated for sure.

Lies of P: It would be unfair to say that this game came as a surprise to anyone. People were talking about it for a couple of years. And with good reason. It looked like one of those Soulslike games that actually successfully captured the spirit of Bloodborne, one of the best Soulslike games ever made.

Upon release, it was confirmed that this game was as good as it looked. Hence, it’s here now on this list of games that can end up winning GOTY.

Sea of Stars: This role-playing game is one of the best-looking indies out there. Heavily inspired by the chrono-trigger games, this game serves as a perfect reminder of the fact that gameplay is all that matters. Some might consider Sea of Stars to not be as good-looking as the games it is competing with. But when it comes to providing an excellent RPG experience, this game shines.

And it would only encourage more developers to develop such games if Sea of Stars wins a GOTY. The market for turn-based RPGs is still thriving, all thanks to games like these.
