News of Apple gearing up to launch a gaming Mac recently emerged on the internet. Historically, gaming and Mac are two terms that never went hand-in-hand. Apple has always been a brand that presents its Macs as personal-use and work-use PCs. However, it looks like the brand is ready to expand into a new territory.

The rumor expects Apple to unveil its M3 class silicon chip for its latest Macs on October 30. This new M3 chip is expected to follow a 3nm architecture, offering a huge upgrade over its M2 predecessor. The biggest sign of this architecture is the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro chip. The A17 Pro follows a 3nm architecture, which allows the latest iPhone Pro model to run video games. Further, the upcoming M3 chip is expected to feature hardware-accelerated ray tracing much like the A17 Pro chip.

A month ago, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple said in an interview with Forbes, “I think there’s significant excitement both in terms of A17 Pro and M3 on the Mac, about our role in gaming, and we’re very serious about it—this is not a hobby for us. It’s something we’re putting all of ourselves out there on. iOS is the best gaming platform that’s out there and we want to keep it the best and just keep taking it to the next level. And our silicon road map really is in a camp by itself, we think.”

Valve Puts a Challenge Ahead of Apple Which Currently Seeks to Flourish in the Gaming Industry

With this powerful chip coming to the upcoming Macs, they surely can brag about running games. And Apple has already hinted AAA titles will be arriving for Macs. In an interview with IGN, Apple’s VP of Platform Architecture, Tim Millet was asked whether the new games announced for the iPhone 15 Pro will eventually arrive for Mac. Millet responded with a hopeful comment, claiming, “The developers are going to work with us to do it.”

All these factors point toward Apple targeting the gaming industry next. However, whether their entry into this field is a good one is still up in the air. But a closer look at the statistics may provide us with a better picture.

What are Apple’s chances?

There is no doubt Apple is targeting the gaming industry. Their arrival to the industry, however, may prove to be a blessing for the gaming industry. At this moment, a major chunk of the industry is under Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo. However, their dominance is limited to the console and PC sectors. On the other hand, mobile gaming has emerged to be a kingmaker in the gaming industry.

In 2022 alone, the console category generated $58.6 billion. However, the mobile gaming category generated a whopping $91.4 billion in revenue. This figure is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years, all thanks to feature-rich smartphones. This expected growth is one of the key reasons why Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard King (ABK). Xbox aims to become a major stakeholder in the cloud and mobile gaming sector via this acquisition.

However, Apple has a chance to become a major stakeholder in the category before Xbox. Apple already has established itself as the top smartphone manufacturer in the US and Europe. Furthermore, their ecosystem and cross-connectivity between products is one of the best in the world. So Apple can rapidly set foot in the gaming industry if they want to. They already have established hardware and software. They just need to gain the faith of developers to create games keeping their architecture in mind. Apple already has some good news as Capcom recently announced that Resident Evil Village will be available on the iPhone 15 Pro and on iPad models with the M1 chip after October 30.

What other sectors Apple can expand upon?

Another factor that works in the favor of Apple is they are the app distributors on iPhone. Both Apple and Google are the big players in the mobile gaming industry. With its position already strong in one sector, it is natural for Apple to expand its avenues by looking at the PC sector too. A collaboration with Xbox or PlayStation to enter the console industry might be a long shot, but a possible one. Sony can also tie up with Apple to provide cloud streaming for PS5 games in North America.

However, all these are speculations for now. The next step of Apple will be on October 30 during the ‘Scary Fast’ event. The event begins at 5 PM PT and may unveil the new M3 chip.
