Sony Interactive Entertainment has reintroduced movies to the consoles after a two-year of discontinuing the service. The movies offered are exclusively from Sony Pictures Entertainment, the corporate cousin of PlayStation. The move was made because PlayStation noticed an increasing number of users shifting to free and subscription-based streaming video services.

The Sony Pictures core app brings in the ability to stream HDR movies at up to 80 megabits per second. Players can expect quality similar to 4K Ultra HD on the Blu-ray format, which is a significant selling point of the Sony Pictures Core app. The Sony Pictures Core app is initially going to be available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Sony has plans to premiere it in additional markets soon.

Sony Interactive Entertainment intends to expand its list and provide more benefits for Sony Pictures Core. This expansion encompasses the incorporation of anime that can usually be found on Crunchyroll.

With existing industry giants in the market like Netflix, Prime and many more, it will be interesting to see how Sony’s service will compare.
