PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan Ranks Amongst 500 Most Influential Global Media Business Leaders

Sony PlayStation has seen numerous generations and a number of super-successful franchises over the years. Every console that Sony has released except for the ill-fated PS Vita has been very successful.

And almost every first-party game that Sony released has defined a generation or reinvented the wheel in one way or the other. And yes, all this comes from the creative studios that work on these games. But it also comes from the strong decisions that the executives like Jim Ryan take. And he has been duly rewarded for it.

Jim Ryan has had a big hand in bringing PlayStation where it is today

Jim Ryan joined Sony Computer Entertainment, in 1994. He has been one of the main forces that guided PlayStation’s journey over the years. From being a console that was made just to put Nintendo out of business to being one of the market leaders, PlayStation had quite a journey over the years.

And Jim Ryan grew from just being there to the President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe in 2011. Then, PlayStation 4 was very close to its launch. And that’s when Microsoft made every mistake that a console manufacturer should not make when revealing a console.

They blocked used games; locked Xbox consoles behind online connectivity and made Kinect a compulsory requirement. And Sony really took advantage of every single mistake that Microsoft made.

They showed how people could share PlayStation 4 games pretty easily in a video that was clearly poking fun at Microsoft. They then made a specific announcement that the PS camera was not a requirement for console users. And they even announced that PlayStation users could play PlayStation games offline.

And more specifically, PlayStation 4’s slogan was “This is 4 the players.” This slogan pretty much made it clear that, unlike Microsoft, which was focusing on the living room, Sony was focusing on gamers.

And all this led to him being promoted to President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment in April 2019. It is quite an achievement, to be with a brand for so long and help it reach new heights.

Thanks to all his achievements, Jim Ryan has been named Among the 500 Most Influential Global Media Business Leaders by Variety in 2022. He has also been featured on this list in the previous two years as well. This time around he has been joined by PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst.

And it does not look like he has any intentions of stopping. He took the stage recently during CES 2023 to announce a bunch of new PS VR 2 games, and announce Sony’s own customizable accessibility controller.
