In a surprising turn of events, Sony has absolutely shocked the world with the sales of the PlayStation Portal.  The handheld is basically an accessory for the PlayStation that received harsh feedback when it was first announced. The PlayStation Portal resembles a DualShock controller with a sizable screen, allowing players to enjoy PS5 games remotely. Many fans found the device impractical and just a waste of money. However, turns out that may not be the case.

Although there is still time for the launch of the device, Sony gave fans a chance to pre-order the device. The preorder started on September 29th and within the first day itself, the device was sold out for pre-order in one region. Along with the upcoming Portal, PlayStation DualSense controllers have been picking off in some markets. This news shocked the industry as it started to look like Sony was making big money, although many considered the possibility of the device failing in the market.

It was a smart move from Sony to give fans a chance to pre-order the device. This helps Sony project how many devices they need to keep ready for the launch. Sony has dealt with a shortage of supply in the past. Specifically, for the PlayStation 5. That considered, this is Sony’s attempt to avoid that from happening again.

PlayStation 5’s DualSense Edge controller has become the number 1 selling accessory in the US according to Circana (A consumer behavior analyst platform). This indicates that Sony has gone the right way with its recent accessories. The DualSense Edge is designed as a pro-level controller, primarily targeting competitive gamers. It offers extensive customization with interchangeable stick caps and back buttons. Players can make precise sensitivity adjustments, while also facilitating swift profile switching.

PlayStation Portal Price and Specs

The successful pre-order shows how well Sony works on research and development. However, fans initially expected PlayStation Portal to be a standalone handheld console. Although players didn’t get what they wanted, the PlayStation Portal still took off. The streaming device comes with some decent specs and promises players a satisfying gameplay experience.

The PlayStation Portal features an 8-inch LCD screen with a 1080p resolution at 60fps. It includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, allowing users to connect their preferred wired headphones while streaming games. The lack of Bluetooth connectivity may require users to purchase a new PlayStation Link-compatible headset. Although this is not confirmed yet, the Portal is expected to support Wi-Fi 6E, the latest wireless standard, to provide a superior wireless experience.

While Sony has not disclosed the chip used in the PlayStation Portal, it is anticipated to have an ultra-low powered system-on-chip (SoC) similar to devices like the Logitech G-Cloud and Abxylute’s Cloud Gaming Console. It is to be noted that the PlayStation Portal cannot run PS VR2 games or support PS5 cloud streaming. As for battery life, players can expect the battery to last as long as DualSense controllers, which might be enough for casual players. However this might be an issue for long hours of gaming.
