The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time still tugs at the heartstrings of the Zelda fanbase. It’s considered a masterpiece by many fans of the series, and the title sits with a Metacritic score of 99%. Considered one of the best N64 titles of its time, the 1998 release was the first in the franchise to use 3D graphics.
Thus, it has a special place in people’s hearts. OoT (Ocarina of Time) even saw a release on the Nintendo Switch in 2021, but with poor input lag and what many fans considered worse graphics than the original release, it didn’t fare well amongst the players.
However, with news of an unofficial fan port for the N64 title about to hit PC, fans might finally have a reason to get their hopes up.

Ocarina of Time ported to PC
In a trailer uploaded to Youtube by ‘zel.’, we get the first glimpse of what an Ocarina of Time natively running on PC could look like.
This comes in light of the Zelda Reverse Engineering Team (ZRET) finishing their two-year-long project to reverse engineer Ocarina of Time into a code that modern computers can read.

Although one could play Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on PC earlier, it was only possible via running it through an emulator first. But thanks to the efforts of the community, we are now witnessing ports of OoT that could run natively on the platform.
This port is co-developed by zel. and Vertigo and introduces a slew of benefits for the players. For instance, zel. claims in the video description that this port would have wide-screen and up-scaling support. This would be an enormous benefit to players as UltraWide monitors become increasingly mainstream.
Additionally, the Devs have promised that more features like 60 FPS support are soon to follow.
Does the future look bright for fan-made Zelda ports?
In the description of the video zel. writes:

“All of this footage is 100% real, and the project is nearly fully playable. Though there are minor glitches in this very early gameplay footage, these will soon be resolved. This project is not associated with any other group and is the work of vertigo and me.”

While there’s no official release date for the project yet, it seems to be keeping up with the other Zelda PC ports in the works. According to zel. the project is nearly fully playable. Notably, another project spearheaded by the modding group ‘Harbour Masters’ is currently underway, and could release within the month, as reported by VGC.
