This year has been witnessing some unpredictable surprises one after the other when it comes to the gaming industry. Earlier in January, Microsoft announced that it will acquire Call of Duty publisher Activision for a record amount. Few days ago, speculations started doing the rounds of a possible acquisition of Assassin’s Creed publisher Ubisoft.

Interestingly, Ubisoft also happens to be directly involved with Nintendo on an upcoming, awaited project. It’s none other than the Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. It is currently being developed by Ubisoft Milan and is set to come out for the Switch later this year.

However, the ongoing news of Ubisoft potentially getting sold might result in some unwanted situations for both Nintendo and Mario. Or it may be for the good as well, depending on who buys the Far Cry company.

Will Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope still release for the Nintendo Switch if Ubisoft is acquired?
Just few days back, Kotaku reported an information, first shared by Bloomberg, that Ubisoft might be looking to make a deal for acquisition. Amidst decreasing stock prices, the company may eventually end up selling to another firm. However, there’s no official confirmation regarding this news just yet.

Now considering this year’s pattern and the overall scenario in the industry, the main question that now arises is: who will finally buy Ubisoft? Will it be Microsoft that’s on a streak of acquisitions already (Bethesda and now Activision)? Or will Sony take an interest in grabbing this opportunity to expand on its catalog?

It’s an essential question because Ubisoft is currently working on some exciting games already. One of them is for Nintendo Switch, the Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope. Fans of the Switch are looking forward to its launch in 2022.

However, if Ubisoft slides under a company, that’s not interested in offering its developed games to third-party platforms (in this case Nintendo Switch), then there might erupt a real problem. Because in such a situation, the new Mario will be released away from Nintendo’s label, which will be weird and rare for anyone who’s grown up playing titles based on the character.
But then there’s another possibility of a positive outcome as well. In case Ubisoft is bought by an entity that wants to capitalize on its association with other platforms, then Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope might arrive for the Switch. After all, the device generates a lot of profit with tons of fan-favorite IPs. And without a doubt, the evergreen Mario is one of them.
