Sony designed the PlayStation 5 to be a gaming console beast. An AMD Zen 2 CPU with eight cores, an AMD RDNA 2 GPU with 36 compute units, and 16GB of GDDR6 memory power the console. Purchasing a PS5 is a no-brainer for gamers thanks to its superior hardware features.

However, a recent report claims that this powerful hardware was used for purposes other than gaming. The powerful hardware, of course, came through for the user. And the use was to fertilize human eggs with the help of a robot.

An unconventional use of the PS5 as it is used to control a robot

This surprising event was reported in the MIT Technology Review. According to the report, this incident was due to an engineer having limited experience. He was part of the team working on the world’s first insemination robot. However, the engineer found a fix in the form of a PS5 DualSense controller.

The PS5 controller guided the tiny mechanized needle used in the In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) procedure. For those who are unaware, IVF is a technique used to implant sperm into human eggs.

The use of a PS5 DualSense controller for this minute procedure is an accomplishment in itself. And the procedure resulted in the successful fertilization of two eggs, which led to the birth of two baby girls.

According to the researchers, these newborns are the first known to be born following automated fertilization. Eduard Alba, the person who commanded the device, said, “I was calm. In that exact moment, I thought, ‘It’s just one more experiment’.”

These favorable results have boosted the morale of the startup creating the robot. They have also got praise from Gianpiero Palermo, who developed the Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) procedure. “The concept is extraordinary, but this is a baby step,” he said.

And these results will also boost the sales of the PlayStation 5, which is gearing up to launch a new version of the PS5 with a detachable disk drive. Maybe the startup will form a tie-up with Sony to keep using PS5 controllers for the procedure.
