A French gamer has been recently sentenced to 3 years in prison after calling in a fake hostage situation at Ubisoft‘s Montreal office. The man was initially banned by Rainbow Six Siege devs for cheating in the game. The gamer, going by the username Y4nnOXX, called the police to report that several employees were being held hostage at Ubisoft Montreal. After realizing that the call was a prank, Ubisoft was fixated on getting back at the prankster.

It looks like they have delivered on their promise as the gamer has been sentenced in Paris. This would be sure to thwart future efforts to pull a prank like this, given the consequences.

Y4nnOXX couldn’t take a hint

Not everyone takes bans equally in the gaming community. While developers constantly urge community members against cheating or using hacks, not everyone lends an attentive ear. 22-year-old Yanni Ouahioune wasn’t very pleased when Ubisoft banned him for cheating on Rainbow 6. As a move to get back against the developers, Yanni, aka Y4nnOXX, called Montreal police to report a hostage situation at Ubisoft’s office.

Several tense hours passed before people realized the prank. As the truth was spilled, authorities were determined to take necessary steps. It looks like Ubisoft finally got what it wanted as French authorities sentenced Yanni to three years of prison along with directions to compensate the victim of the prank. However, Yanni was receiving psychological treatment even before pulling the stunts.

More crimes against cyber-humanity

Yanni was banned multiple times by Ubisoft from Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Siege. After the final incident, he made a redirected call from Russian servers. Allegations against him were prepared as three separate cases in the French courts. Along with the events transpiring in Montreal, Yanni was also charged with threatening Minecraft developers and DDoS attacks against government entities.

It should be worth noting that this isn’t the first time a banned gamer refused to take the decision with a straight face. Streaming platform Twitch has faced multiple threats from the community after they banned members for disorderly behavior. Many Fortnite players have threatened to cause physical harm to other community members after receiving a ban from Epic Games. Another Nintendo fan shelled out a pretty dime just to gatecrash a shareholders’ meet and rant at the authorities.
