Pokemon video games have been around for almost three decades. This franchise always focused on the goal of making the player the strongest Pokemon Trainer. One of the most crucial aspects of this is understanding the Pokemon Type, which refers to the different elemental attributes of a Pokemon and its moves.

The first two games in the series, Pokemon Red and Green, came out in 1996. However, Game Freak only introduced 15 Pokemon Types at first; but the developers later added three more. The latest addition to the series is Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which has 18 Pokemon Types. So let’s find out how they rank from the weakest to the strongest.

18. Bug

The Pokemon type that most fans avoid in their party is Bug-type. There are some great Pokemon with this typing like Heracross, legendary Volcarona, and Volcarona’s ancestors in Scarlet: Slither Wing. But despite these, the majority of pure Bug-types aren’t great, until they might have a secondary typing.

Bug-type has a disadvantage against multiple Pokemon types like Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ghost, Steel, Fire, and Fairy. Although, it isn’t completely useless, as Bug-types have an edge when fighting Grass, Psychic, and Dark-type. However, without proper secondary typing, Bug-types are not the best choice to have in a player’s party.

17. Ice

Ice-types aren’t that bad, as they have been the Kryptonite for one of the strongest typings in the game. Moreover, some of the strongest and fan-favorite Pokemon with this typing in Scarlet and Violet are Baxcaliburn, Cetitan, and Glaceon.

Not only Dragon-type, but Ice-types are also strong against Flying, Ground, and Grass-types. If it has such a strong type, then why does it rank so low? The reason is its vulnerability. Ice-type Pokemon are weak against Fighting, Rock, Steel, and Fire-type.

16. Rock

Rock-type is one of the first 15 types that was introduced in Generation I of this video game series. Pokemon with this typing has always been known for their high defensive stats. Not to forget, there are some amazing Rock-type in Scarlet and Violet, like the Pseudo-Legendary Tyranitar and its descendant Iron Thorns.

Rock-type offers a great advantage against Flying, Bug, Fire, and Ice-types in a battle. However, it is also weak against multiple types like Fighting, Ground, and Steel. It is particularly poor defensively against two starter Pokemon types, Water and Grass, which are frequently seen in multiple player’s parties.

Also, Rock-type Pokemon are known for their defensive capabilities, but it is limited to physical defense. However, this typing doesn’t have the best special defense stat.

15. Grass

Grass-type is one of the most popular Pokemon-typing. As always a Pokemon from this type has been a starter in every generation of this video game series. Like Scarlet and Violet, players get access to a strong Grass-type Meowscarada, which evolves from the starter Sprigatito.

The Grass-type Pokemon are known for their HP-stealing moves like Leech Seed, Absorb, and Giga Drain. This type also offers an advantage against other typings like Ground, Rock, and Water. Despite its popularity, it has multiple weaknesses against some of the most-used types like Flying, Poison, Bug, Fire, and Ice.

14. Normal

Normal-type is undoubtedly the trickiest one to understand. Pokemon with this typing has access to moves from other types. But again there are not many great ones in the Normal-type move pool. While Pokemon with this typing isn’t super-weak against any type, it also isn’t super-effective against other types.

The only typing it has immunity against is Ghost-type. But despite so many problems, there are some Normal-type heavyweights like Ursaring and Slaking that every trainer like to have in their Pokemon party.

13. Poison

Since the Generation VI Pokemon games, Poison-type has become quite popular among the fans. One of the reasons for the increased hype for this typing is its superiority over the Fairy-type. Aside from this, many players like to use Poison-type as it leaves enemy Pokemon poisoned that chews away their health in the battle.

Poison-type is strong against Fairy and Grass-type. But it is also weak against ground and Phychic-type. Further, Poison-type can do nothing when facing Steel-type, as the latter is immune to it. But despite all these, there are some fan-favorite Poison-type like Clodsire, Dragalge, and Muk.

12. Dark

Game Freak introduced Dark-type in Generation II. It feels like it was introduced to weaken the overpowered Psychic-type. Dark-type is one of the most balanced typings in the game, it is neither overkill nor super weak. Furthermore, there are numerous useful Dark moves like Tormet, Dark Pulse, and Crunch.

Aside from being superior against Psychic-type, it also gives the upper hand in the battle against Ghost-types. But it also has certain weaknesses, like being vulnerable to Fighting, Bug, and Fairy-type. But despite the weaknesses, it is one of the fan-favorite types with amazing Pokemon like Iron Jugulis, Umbreon, and Hydreigon.

11. Psychic

Psychic-type was one of the strongest Pokemon typings in the first-generation games. It was so overpowered that the developers had to create two additional typings to counter it, Dark and Steel-types. Additionally, over the years there have been some amazing Psychic-type Pokemon like Gallade and Espeon.

Psychic-types are one of the best special attackers in the game. It also offers superiority against Fighting and Poison-types. But as renowned and overkill as this type is, there are as many weaknesses.

Not only Dark-types are immune to it, but Psychic-type is also weak against Bug and Ghost-types. Additionally, Pokemon with this typing usually have weak physical attack and defense stat.

10. Flying

Pokemon games won’t be the same without Flying-type. There won’t be a trainer who won’t have a Pokemon of this type in their party. Although flying types are no longer needed for traveling in Scarlet and Violet, it has some of the fastest Pokemon in the games.

Flying-type remains a strong type that players like to use against Fighting, Bug, and Grass-Type. Further, it has immunity against Ground-type Pokemon. Despite being such a strong typing, it is vulnerable to Electric and Rock-types. Some famous Flying-types in Scarlet and Violet are Staraptor and Braviary.

9. Fighting

As the name Fighting-type suggests, Pokemon with this typing are known for their physical attacking stats. If someone needs a strong physical attacker, Fighting-type is the go-to Pokemon. It even does super-effective damage against Normal, Ice, Dark-types, and also the highly defensive types like Rock and Steel.

There are some fan-favorite Fighting-type Pokemon like Lucario and Annihilape. However, this typing offers some limitations, like not being great against special attackers and in double battles. It is also extremely weak against Flying, Fairy, and Psychic-types.

8. Ghost

In every culture, ghosts are creepy and powerful. It seems Ghost-type has those same features even in the Pokemon series. They are some of the most powerful Pokemon to use in the game, especially as a special attacker with moves like Shadow Ball and Destiny Bond at their disposal. Further, they are super effective against Psychic and Normal-types, having immunity against the latter.

There are powerful Ghost-types in Generation IX games, like Gengar, Mismagius, Houndstone, and Dragapult. But despite having some of the strongest Pokemon with this typing, there are certain weaknesses. Ghost-type is vulnerable to Dark and fellow Ghost-types. Also, most Pokemon with this typing doesn’t have the greatest HP stats.

7. Electric

Who doesn’t love Electric-type? Possibly, it is one of the fan-favorite typing, as the most famous Pokemon, Pikachu, is an Electric-type. This Pokemon type has great offensive and defensive advantages, as getting hit by an Electric-type move or physically attacking a Pokemon of this type can paralyze the enemy.

Aside from Pikachu, there are some great Electric-type Pokemon like Luxray, Jolteon, and Pokemon Violet’s Legendary mascot Miraidon. Electric-type has a great advantage against Flying and Water-types. However, there are some weaknesses too, like Ground-type being immune to it.

6. Water

Water is one of the most essential things in life. This statement is even true in the Pokemon universe. Water-type is among one the strongest types in the games. The best thing about this typing is the variety it offers, from defensive tanks to fast attackers. Moreover, there are only two weaknesses to it, Electric and Grass-type.

When it comes to having an edge over other types, Water is superior to two of the most-defensive typing Rock and Ground. Further, it is also strong against Fire-type. Players can easily get access to a strong Water-type after starting the game, as one of the starters is always from this typing like Quaxly in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

5. Ground

Although it is weak against the just mentioned Water-type, it is one of the best typing when looking for Pokemon with some great defensive stats. Ground-type only has a weakness against Water, Grass, and Ice-types. Aside from these three typings, they are extremely vulnerable to Flying-type.

Great Tusk, Garchomp, and Hippowdown are some of the excellent Ground-type Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet. Further, these Pokemon have access to strong Ground-type moves like Earthquake and Dig. This typing also gets an edge against Poison, Rock, Steel, Fire, and Electric-type.

4. Steel

Steel-types should be the go-to Pokemon for players looking for the finest defensive tanks in the game. They are only weak against Fighting, Fire, and the above mentioned Ground-type. But despite these weaknesses, it has great defensive stats to take a huge number of hits before going down.

Steel-type is super effective against Rock, Ice, and the latest Fairy-type. Also, there are some excellent Steel-type Pokemon like Gholdengo, Kingambit, and Corviknight. So there is a chance to see many players use Steel-type in their party.

3. Fire

Nothing can go wrong with the classic Fire-type. It is one of the most-beloved typings among the fans. It only has three types of weaknesses: Water, Rock, and Ground. But it also has an edge over typings like Bug, Grass, Ice, and the highly defensive Steel.

Players can easily get access to one of the strongest Fire-type Pokemon at the start of the game. The Scarlet and Violet players can get access to Skeledirge easily by simply choosing Fuecoco.

2. Fairy

Game Freak introduced Fairy-type in Generation VI, meaning it is the newest addition to Pokemon typing. Fairy-type Pokemon, like Sylveon and Gardevoir, are known for their adorable appearances. But don’t be fooled by that, as the Fairy-type is one of the most powerful Pokemon typing in the games.

Because of its immunity to the mighty Dragon-type, the Fairy-type is the greatest choice when battling the mighty Pokemon type. The developers created this typing to counter Dragon. Aside from this benefit, Fairy-type is also extremely effective against Dark and Fighting-type. Further, it has only two weaknesses: Poison and Steel-types.

1. Dragon

Dragon-types have been the strongest typing in Pokemon games since Generation I. It works against practically all types because most Dragons have boosted defensive stats. These Pokemon have access to powerful offensive moves such as Draco Meteor and Outrage in addition to defense.

There aren’t many flaws in this Pokemon typing. It is only vulnerable to Ice, Fairy, and fellow Dragon-types. Further, many Legendary Pokemon are Dragon-types due to their dominance. Koraidon and Miraidon, Scarlet and Violet’s Legendary mascots are also Dragon-types.
