The Playstation exclusive, Returnal was released on April 30th, 2021. Returnal is Housemarque Studios’ first game with a clearly defined narrative. Titles like  Resogun and Nex Machina didn’t have much of a story but were well-received due to their gameplay. Returnal, on the other hand, features the perfect mix of gameplay and story.

Returnal follows a space explorer named Selene.  Following her crash landing on an alien planet, she must battle monsters to survive a loop of hell. The roguelike shooter is already in the conversation for ‘Game of the Year’ due to its captivating storyline and sublime gameplay.

However, this is not to say that Returnal does not have its fair share of issues. The game is still to see a feature that allows players to pause the game and save it in the middle of their run. This would prevent loss of data due to the game crashing or an untimely power outage.

Returnal will receive additional saving features in the future

Mikael Haveri, Housemarque’s Marketing Director explained to Axios Gaming the difficulties of introducing a mid-run save feature. He says “We understand that there are some systems in place that are currently a hindering factor.’ Currently, we just don’t know exactly what it is. So, it’s very difficult to announce anything, because I think there’s a lot of different people looking for different things.”

Fans have been asking for this save feature since the game first released. This led to a Reddit argument regarding the same going viral. In response, Housemarque tweeted “We hear the community, and we love you all. Nothing to announce now but keep playing and enjoying the challenge as you can!”

While Housemarque has promised to deal with this issue in the near future, currently they are tied up trying to fix existing game bugs and crashes. A mid-run save feature would greatly improve the playability of the PlayStation exclusive as players would not have to commit themselves to long gaming sessions.
