The long-going scheduled negotiations of SAG-AFTRA with major gaming industry giants have finally come to an end. Unfortunately, the conclusion hasn’t been ideal news for gaming fans across the globe. The core of the organization has officially confirmed the ‘no deal’ rumors and this might be a major turn in the context of the functionality of all the elite gaming developers involved.

The ongoing writer-actors strike in Hollywood has already been a big concern for the entertainment industry. The protests have led to a lot of delays in much-awaited projects and a substantial increase in the number of releases and undergoing projects. On the contrary, the gaming industry was having a golden run in terms of business and quality. Well, until now it seems as if the SAG-AFTRA failed negotiation might be the next big party spoiler!

The deliberations have come to an end with no agreement in sight, according to a joint statement from the video game developers and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

To understand the scale of the issue, it is important to know about all the parties that were involved in the negotiations. Activision Productions Inc., Blindlight LLC, Disney Character Voices Inc., Electronic Arts Productions Inc., Epic Games, Inc., Formosa Interactive LLC, Insomniac Games Inc., Take 2 Productions Inc., VoiceWorks Productions Inc., and WB Games Inc. are the developers that are involved in the proceedings. Unarguably, a huge share of the elite developers is now under the threat of an imminent strike.

Although pressure is undoubtedly present, it appears as though there may yet be hope that video game creators and SAG-AFTRA may come to an agreement. The strike authorization vote will be sent back to members at the beginning of the month, the SAG-AFTRA National Board overwhelmingly decided. Then, just a few days ago, SAG-AFTRA members unanimously decided to approve a strike against 10 significant video game firms in the event that a new agreement could not be reached.

The main issue

The issue that the organization aims to address is quite congruent with the motive of strikes happening in Hollywood. The minimum wage differences, work environment, employer rights, and benefits are some of the core values that the organization demands answers on. Adding on, the rising threat of AI dependence on the creative industry is also a highlighted issue by SAG-AFTRA.

What does this no-deal mean to the future of the gaming industry?

The first rational deduction from the whole episode is that the eSports industry also remains under the threat of an imminent strike. However, there hasn’t been any such movement or call yet. But fans cannot neglect the fact that the negotiations haven’t worked in the favor of both parties.

On the positive side, the ongoing negotiations were allegedly progressive and weren’t an utter failure. During the update, the officials claimed to continue their efforts to bring the disagreements to a diplomatic resolution soon.
