In the early days of gaming, SEGA emerged as one of the leading brands in the industry. During this time, the Sonic franchise rose to prominence among gamers, with its 2D side-scrolling adventure. Consequently, SEGA began looking into bringing back the franchise. Speaking to Famitsu magazine, SEGA President Yukio Sugino revealed the company’s plans of working with the Sonic franchise. While he did not expressly reveal specific details of what games to expect, he hinted at reboots and remakes being a major part of the future.

During the interview, he said, “Of course, we have to do new things, but as with all IPs, we don’t have new works or reboots. We will develop while selecting which is appropriate at this timing for each IP, such as ‘This is the best way to do this IP’. ‘Sonic’ is also SEGA’s signature IP, and in parallel with the new game, we are considering reboots and remakes.

With Sonic the Hedgehog being so closely tied to the identity of SEGA, the choice to bring it back in a big way makes sense. However, this does not mean the company stops making new games or puts plans on pause. The work for reboots and remakes will take place alongside new games. SEGA may release these remakes between releases of new titles to maximize sales while ensuring fans do not have to wait on Sonic content.
