

Following the reports of a rumored Donkey Kong movie starring Seth Rogen, insiders have heart-warming news for Donkey Kong fans across the world. New reports have now surfaced, suggesting a new title in the long-running franchise could finally become a reality.

The classic Nintendo franchise celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. After the upcoming Mario movie makes its way to the theaters, it’s only fair they give Kong the same respect. And what better way to re-introduce a franchise than launching a new game?

Donkey Kong: a revival of a Nintendo classic
2021 and 2022 has been and is going to be big for Nintendo’s cinematic aspirations, what with the untitled Super Mario movie that stars Chris Pratt as the most famous plumber. Mario is launching in December. Although the film focuses on Mario and his brother, Luigi, to an extent, it will also feature the fan-favorite ape, Donkey Kong. Kong’s character will be voiced by the comedian turned actor/filmmaker, Seth Rogen.
Various reports earlier this week indicated that Seth Rogen and Nintendo are allegedly working on a standalone Donkey Kong movie as well. Now, well-renowned industry insider, Samus Hunter, has suggested a new Kong game could also be in the works.

The history of Kong
Kong first appeared in the original arcade game, Donkey Kong, on July 9, 1981. The era-defining title was one of the most popular games of its time and opened doors for Nintendo in the market. 40 years from the first game’s launch, there are around 30 games in the franchise, including a few spin-offs.

However, it has been a while since the community had a chance to witness the menace-causing ape in action. The last title, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, developed by Retro Studios, debuted in 2014 for Wii U. The game made its way to the latest generation of Nintendo consoles, Nintendo Switch, in 2018.

This year marks the four decades of Donkey Kong and the fans are excited to see what Nintendo has in store for them.
As of now, there’s no official confirmation. Until Nintendo announces something exhilarating, you can see Kong in the upcoming Super Mario movie that comes out this winter, on December 21, 2021.
