Why should Call of Duty introduce classic maps in Modern Warfare II?

It’s already known that the rebooted sub-series, Modern Warfare, takes a lot of inspiration from Infinity Ward‘s original trilogy. Any hardcore lover who’s played the older titles can notice many references or recreations of iconic moments in recent entries. This year’s MWII is a clear example of that, featuring one of the most epic twists and turns of 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 with a fresh flavor.

But why’s it the case that Activision and Infinity Ward decided to offer so much relatability to a game that many players have already enjoyed in the past? A simple answer for this could be the nostalgia factor. It’s something that the majority of the fans admire. Especially in a franchise like Call of Duty. Whenever there’s a call back made to a classic entry, in any way possible, they get excited and more involved.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare II Campaign (PC) Review – A Worthy Sequel to an Iconic Blockbuster

Probably that’s the reason why 2022’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare II has got a great chance of attracting back loyal gamers to the series. And bringing back the older maps might be the best trick for Activision to give the fans what they want – a feeling of reliving the past. 2009’s Modern Warfare 2 is iconic not just because it is a fantastic game, but also because it featured many memorable maps in CoD history.

Are the old CoD Modern Warfare 2 maps from 2009 coming back?

Locations like Rust, Scrapyard, Sub Base, Terminal, and Skidrow are still fans’ favorites. Probably that’s why some of them are still featured in titles like CoD Mobile due to their unmatched popularity. And given the fact that this year’s premium is partially based on the original MW2 from a decade ago, it makes total sense for the makers to bring the old, legendary maps back in Modern Warfare II.

In fact, they might be on their way already, according to the strong leaks. More than a month ago, a reputed insider, The Ghost of Hope on Twitter, had mentioned that Call of Duty will introduce literally all the iconic Modern Warfare 2 maps (from 2009) together at once. Furthermore, the scooper added that this addition may arrive during the Year 2 update in 2023.

Simply put, maps like Afghan, Derail, Terminal, Crash, Sub Base, Skidrow, Highrise, Quarry, Favela, and other classic areas might make a return. As there won’t be a brand new CoD title releasing next year, giving the old maps back might surely be a masterstroke by Activision to keep the hardcore players hooked. Especially those who never leave nostalgia behind.
