

Previously this week, Sony made an announcement for Horizon Forbidden West stating that it won’t provide free Digital Upgrade to PS4 users. Players would have to resort to the $80 Digital Deluxe Exclusive instead of an upgrade. This would be a more expensive affair, which certainly hasn’t gone down well with the fans.

Following this, Sony retracted this announcement following dissatisfaction from the community. Sony posted an announcement on their official blog about taking a U-Turn on their plans. Horizon Forbidden West and several other PlayStation games would be available for a free update to PS5.

Sony backtracks on its decision for Horizon Forbidden West upgrades
On Saturday, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan announced Sony has decided to retract from its plans. He confirmed that Horizon Forbidden West would be available for a free upgrade to the PS5 version for PS4 players.

Ryan addressed Sony’s prior statement that it will provide free updates for its cross-gen launch games, citing the game’s postponement to February 2022, which moved the game “out of the launch timeframe we first envisioned.”

Ryan said in the announcement, “Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver it on February 18, 2022. However, it’s abundantly clear that the offerings we confirmed in our pre-order kickoff missed the mark.”

Adding to this, Ryan also confirmed that all PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (newly releasing on PS4 and PS5) will offer a $10 Digital Upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This would apply to both digital and physical versions.

Sony has also confirmed that Horizon’s latest version has been delayed till February 2022. The game is available for pre-order globally.
