While the current era of gaming brought a new level in terms of visuals, it still lacks in one area. Having to physically buy a disc or even download a game in 2023 seems outdated. This is where subscription based services come in. Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus already offer a subscription-based service that makes gaming more affordable, but Sony looks set to level PlayStation gaming to the next level.

The beginnings of PlayStation 5’s streaming service

Streaming video games is not an uncommon idea. It works similar to how people stream shows and movies, except with video games. A similar idea is used by Nvidia, with its GeForce Now service. The basic idea is to provide a high-quality gaming experience for fans that keeps prices low. The idea can revolutionize the way titles are sold in the market today.

Sony promised the arrival of the service a while ago. Recently, it entered the beta testing phase for the PlayStation 5. Select users from PlayStation Plus received invite codes for the test. Once you do enter the codes, you can test the features for yourself. A big question fans found themselves asking was what 4K streaming would entail, whether it spoke of the resolution of the actual game, or the resolution for the stream. The resolution aids makes it a smoother experience since streaming games over the Internet is a big load to take.

Users who had early access revealed Sony included a feature that lets players decide what resolution they wish to stream on, with the choices being 720p, 1080p, 1440p, or 4K. This choice may depend on the service plan you choose, as Nvidia reserved the 4K option for its most premium plan. Additionally, the choice may also help negotiate connection issues.

As for the list of titles available, initial announcements from Sony indicated they would use PlayStation Plus titles as part of the test. It includes a wide variety of titles that can push the streaming ability of the service to the limit, giving better insights into how well it can hold up. Sony did come up with a similar idea with the PS3, but it had its own shortcomings. Fans hope with the PS5, there will be better results.
