The Microsoft-Activision contract is extending further than it should, and the reason for this is Sony’s lack of cooperation in reaching an agreement with Xbox for the transaction. This is also why Phil Spencer is attempting to reach an agreement with their Japanese competitors, including Sony and Nintendo.

However, as Sony continues to put obstacles in the way of Microsoft gaining a significant share of the market, Microsoft Gaming Chief, Phil Spencer, appears to be losing patience and has now indicated that Sony is more determined to speak with regulators than Microsoft itself. Thus it also seems that Sony has been trying to turn the entire discussion of buying Activision against Microsoft and “protect its dominance on the console.”

Xbox CEO Phil Spencer says that PlayStation is not trying to help them in sorting out the differences regarding the Activision deal

In his recent appearance in the Second Request podcast, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer said that Sony is not very happy about Microsoft taking over Activision as they fear that their dominance in the market might get weaker after the deal. This is also the reason why there are so many statements by him that show that Sony is intentionally trying to create hurdles for Microsoft by talking to the regulators more than clearing the matter with their console rivals.

Phil Spencer said, “Sony is leading the dialogue around why the deal shouldn’t go through to protect its dominant position on console, so the thing they grab onto is Call of Duty,” while reacting to the intentions of Sony regarding taking control of Call of Duty.

“Sony is trying to protect its dominance on the console. The way they grow is by making Xbox smaller,” Phil Spencer said while making sure that his take on Sony is clearly understood. This also means that Xbox knows that taking over will loosen the grip of Sony in the market and thus make its presence stronger than it initially planned to happen.
