Sony PlayStation prediction is incredibly bold

Recently, Sony published data for the first quarter. To the surprise of fans, it reported a 31% decrease in its profit. Despite this, its PlayStation division remains strong. It made a bold forecast for FY23, targeting a record high.

A large part of this forecast is from PlayStation 5 sales. Sony aims to sell 25 million units this year. Sony’s COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki explained the company’s decision to increase the forecast, saying, “We have positioned the accelerated penetration of PS5 hardware as one of the highest priorities in this fiscal year, and we will try to work steadily to implement necessary measures to achieve our hardware sales target of 25 million units.”

This is a bold move, especially considering PlayStation’s record standards at $26.78 billion from FY22. This number is the highest Sony has posted with PlayStation. What is even more shocking for fans is Sony making these predictions without having as many first-party titles lined up for this year. They left fans disappointed when this year’s PlayStation Showcase did not see any first-party titles announced. Moreover, reports from Sony indicated a lot of its first-party titles slated for a 2023 release were pushed to 2024.

Part of their revenue could stem from sales of its PlayStation Plus service. Premium plans saw some subscribers receive access to PlayStation’s cloud streaming service, which will be launched sometime next year. Fans cannot help but wonder what the numbers will look like if first-party titles such as The Last of Us 2 Remaster release this year!

That is not all. Sony has one big trick up its sleeve, Project Q. The infamous handheld device is rumored to have a late 2023 launch. If rumors are true, its sales will be crucial to Sony’s numbers.
