The arrival of PS5 has brought Sony back at the crossroads where it has to slowly phase the older one out. It seems like that process has already begun, starting with Japan, where PS4s are no longer on sale. According to a report by VGC, Sony is aiming to shift its focus solely on the production of PS5 to meet the growing demands.

Sony solely wants to focus on PS5 as oppose to previous gen models
It seems like the time for PS4 is slowly ticking down in Japan. The gaming giant confirmed that it will no longer offer any PS4 models other than the standard jet black 500 GB slim variant in that region. Consumers can no longer purchase other models of the consoles once it sells the existing stock out.
It is still unclear whether the PS4 Pro will have a similar fate going forward. PS4 Pro and base PS5 both have similar prices with the older gen console just being cheaper by $100.

Is this the end of the line for PS4?
Similar reports have surfaced not just from media houses but from the fans as well. In a Twitter post, one Japanese fan posted an image of retail store that had claimed something similar. If this is the natural order of progression for Sony, then it would mark the end of the days for PS4.
This should translate really well in terms of the production of PS5 as the demand for the consoles has continued to skyrocket the world over.

If Sony applies the same strategy for every other market in the world, then PS4 will eventually be phased out in 2021. This would mark a complete transition from the older gen of consoles to the new-gen, thus completing the cycle.
