MKBHD, aka Marques Brownlee, is a reputed source for tech reviews. In a recent YouTube short by him, he states what he thinks about the latest PlayStation Portal and the results look bad. He captioned the video “The PlayStation Portal Seems… Terrible” and then went out to point out what he thinks about the new accessory.

The PlayStation Portal arrived on the scene with a lot of buzz, offering an 8-inch screen, dual-sense controller, and a wallet-friendly price tag of $199. Yet, as the tech YouTuber took a deeper look into what they are offering, the deal doesn’t seem so good anymore.

The PlayStation portal seems more like an accessory than a device. This is because it requires users to have a PlayStation, as well as an internet connection to make use of it. And all devices need to be connected to the same network. This raises concerns about the portability of the device, making it unusable while being outside.

In the Video, the YouTuber mentions the lack of Bluetooth connectivity in the device. The point here is that the Portal users can only use devices that are compatible with the PlayStation Link; the Pulse Elite Wireless headset or the Pulse Explore wireless earbuds. This will require users to spend an additional $150 or $200, respectively. And this could make the lack of bluetooth compatibility a major deal-breaker. The video states how this restricts users’ audio options and personal preferences.

The lack of the Bluetooth function reminded Brownlee of how Apple stopped providing features like headphone jacks. And he continued to speak of a hypothetical situation where Apple does the same and removes Bluetooth for a propriety “Wireless Audio Protocol” that only works with Airpods. The video ends with the YouTuber cheekily telling Tim Cook to not get any ideas here.

In the video, MKBHD is not just pointing out the flaws in the PlayStation Portal, but trying to give an insight into what the consumers want. In a market as rapidly evolving as the gaming industry, making things less accessible for consumers for monetary gains is looked down upon. 

Feedback from big tech reviewers helps companies plan their products. Furthermore, companies often listen to constructive criticism and do try to make changes to tend to the consumer. That being said, we still look forward to a full-scale handheld console by Sony.
