The fatal shooting of Nahel Merzouk by a police officer during a traffic stop triggered riots in French cities. He was only 17 years old. The protests, which have attracted a significant number of young participants, stem from long-standing grievances in France’s deprived suburbs, where many individuals of immigrant origins reside. These communities often feel disconnected from opportunities and experience perceived discrimination by the police.
