The upcoming series, releasing on January 15, 2023, on the streaming platform HBO MAX is based on the PS3 game Last of Us, released in 2013. The first season will follow the event of the first game and the potential season 2 will adapt the story of part 2. In this television adaptation, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will play the main characters, Joel and Ellie.

When asked about the adaptation, Druckmann said, “People see bad adaptations and it adds credence to the idea that games are childish.” He added, “I love the idea that someone could watch this and be moved by it and then be like, ‘Wait, that’s based on the video game?’”
