GTA V is an iconic game, without a doubt. While the game’s storyline is incredible as it is, it wouldn’t be so popular without the actors who voiced the characters either. Michael, Franklin, and Lamar are so memorable to the community mostly because of their iconic voices that brought these characters to life. However, the voices we all know so well could have been entirely different, as some of GTA V’s actors have revealed recently.

In an interview, Ned Luke and Shawn Fonteno, the voices behind Michael and Franklin respectively, said that Rockstar Games had a lot of different options in mind before they cast the final actors for GTA V.

GTA V remains an icon

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto franchise is easily one of the biggest names in the industry. Among the multiple titles, GTA V is arguably the best-performing one, with over 180 million units sold since the game’s release in 2013. The game’s virtually endless scope allows players to do whatever they like as well as mod everything to their liking. While the community is still waiting eagerly for any news on the next Grand Theft Auto title, GTA V’s popularity hasn’t diminished at all.

While GTA V’s narrative is often hailed as one of the best ever made in a video game, the voice actors who worked in the title were also responsible for making the characters memorable to the fans.

Ned, Fonteno, and Gerald “Slink” Johnson as Michael, Franklin, and Lamar respectively are considered to be among the best trios in any game ever. However, in a recent interview with FullSquadGaming, they revealed that casting could have been very different.

It could have been different…

In the interview, Fonteno says, “My competition was strong“. It’s understandable when he mentions the names that Rockstar could have gone for. Rappers Nipsey Hussle, Young Gangsta, and Problem all had auditioned for the roles of either Franklin or Lamar. He says jokingly that Rockstar had all the streets lined up to be part of the landmark game. Fenton further said anyone who is a rapper turned up for a chance to be part of something massive.

While we can only speculate as to how any other cast would turn out, Franklin, Michael, Lamar, and Trevor all became iconic just the way they are. What do you think about the other options that Rockstar had? Would you want any of these names to be cast in GTA V or are you fine with how the game’s characters sound?
