“The Fortnite Teacher”: This Fifth Grade Teacher Is Changing the Dynamics of Tutoring Through the Popular Battle Royale Game

Fortnite is one of the biggest battle royale games in the industry. The Epic Games marque product moreover boasts a large audience among teens, who are the backbone of the game’s growth. But there have been significantly tedious situations that have caused many negative repercussions on this community. Especially on the lines of bullying and online harassment.

Now, a school teacher is using this very platform as a means of teaching her pupils many important educational factors. We can say she is sort of a moral vigilante who is using Fortnite as a tool to create a greater and more positive mindset among teens.

Lori Weber, a fifth-grade teacher from Indiana is using her creative ways to take education to the battlegrounds of Fortnite. We all know Fortnite to be a place for competitive enthusiasm but also a toxic infected ground at certain times. Weber has stepped in to teach students the moral side of things. In the game, she goes by the username “Slytrue48”.

Through her custom games, she tries to propagate a free-spirited and toxic free behavior to her pupils. The teacher has set up her own Twitch channel, which has witnessed massive growth because of her wholesome content. Weber is taking a unique approach to make a safe environment for students in online spaces that is devoid of negativity.

She has a set of norms that is followed in the Fortnite matches. These include swearing towards others and self being banned, and team cooperation being a must.

The Fortnite teacher took some time to get accustomed to the fast-paced battle royale. She had experience in other games, but Fortnite was a bit different compared to them. But she managed to get the gist of the game thanks to practice and watching professionals like Ninja.

Lori Weber explains how this method is something that can create good relationships with the students.

“The way I pitch it is like, ‘we’re going to be nice to each other. We’re going to be good humans. And we’re going to play Fortnite together.” This is what Lori has to say to her dear students during the Fortnite sessions. Lori additionally states that this has helped her students come out of their shells and create impeccable social skills. Moreover, even the principal of the school is in full support of Lori and her streaming activities.

She plans to become a Fortnite streamer full-time post-retirement and currently can proudly boast more than 410,000 followers.
