But to the surprise of many fans, it was not the remake of the long-delayed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Rather it was a new title side-scrolling action platformer.

Ubisoft announces a new Prince of Persia title at Summer Game Fest 2023

When Ubisoft announced the upcoming title, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, the crowd went into a frenzy. It was a new take on the well-established formula of side-scrolling platformer games. With its cel shaded graphics and fluid mechanics, the game would be a great addition for casual and hardcore gamers alike. Along with the reveal, Ubisoft also dropped a trailer for the game.

The game’s website states, “Dash into a stylish and thrilling action-adventure platformer game set in a mythological Persian world where the boundaries of time and space are yours to manipulate”. This means the game will have some elements of bending space and time. Critics are stating this game is a Metroidvania-type game. Ubisoft has also revealed that The Lost Crown’s soundtrack will be composed by Mentrix, an Iranian-born composer.

Further reveals about this game will probably take place at the upcoming Ubisoft Forward. The release date for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is slated for January 18, 2024. It will be a cross-platform release for Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Amazon Luna.

Fans react to the trailer of the upcoming Ubisoft platformer game

This trailer definitely piqued the interest of fans. With many fans praising the graphics, some thought Ubisoft made bold choices with the title. User BroosGamers said, “This is like Netflix bought the right to pop and turn it into a game.” Furthermore, another user criticized Ubisoft stating, “From Assassins Creed without the Assassins to Prince of Persia without the Prince… You sure know your audience Ubisoft…”

But some fans also supported the new game. A fan said, “Personally I dig it. Sands of Time is still coming. PoP deserves its Metroidvania title for the modern day just like every other franchise. Looks awesome, the song slaps, and the art style is wicked. What’s new for the franchise is good for spreading awareness of its potential. Sign me up.”

While a fan had some different theories. He speculated, “This looks like a completely different game from 2D and 3D Prince of Persia. I would not be surprised if this game started as its own IP and then got slapped the Prince of Persia title for brand recognition.”
