The Last of Us Factions has an official update! The game’s director himself gave a massive update on the progress of the visionary multiplayer title, taking the internet by surprise. Fortunately, the update brought an end to the ongoing speculations of Naughty Dog canceling the project. Well, the latest update has certainly ignited a new series of speculations for the TLOU fans.

The developers’ last release under the The Last of Us banner was the 2020 sequel. Ever since then, fans have been anticipating a faction multiplayer for the sequel. While the project was confirmed by the game’s director himself, the progress had remained under the sheets for over a year, until now. The update doesn’t just debunk the theory of its cancellation, but also gives impressive signs of what to expect next from the world of TLOU. Here’s how Super Mario Bros. Wonder helped the fans have the big update!

Vinit Agarwal, the Director of The Last of Us online project currently untitled, has finally confirmed Naughty Dog is still working on the game. But if it wasn’t for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, fans might not have got the big update.

Apparently, Vinit Agarwal was enjoying Nintendo’s latest 2D masterpiece and was struggling to pass the final challenge. While immersed in the Nintendo creation, the director expressed how he loved the challenge provided in the game. After hours of dedication, Vinit was finally able to pull it off.

In a celebratory tweet, the latter wrote, I did it! Wow that was hard, easily 300+ Marios dead in the process. And so this tweet can live on in peace… yes, I’m still working on that game.”

It looks like the director was aware that fans were interested in knowing the progress of the TLOU faction. The confirmation has re-ignited the excitement built around the project. Although with the update it seems like the fans will have to stay patient for a while to experience the multiplayer adventure, it’s still better than believing the game has been canceled.

It’s unclear how many people are currently working on the game and what kind of release schedule it hopes to adhere to. Although it was said in October that the project is “basically on ice,” it appears that Agarwal is still devoted to it. Of course, unless Naughty Dog formally addresses the matter in public, it’s all just conjecture.

What to expect from the upcoming faction?

A year ago, Vinit had taken to his social media and talked about the approach of Naughty Dog for the multiplayer game. Sharing an image from the project, the latter wrote, My love for The Last of Us & Naughty Dog modes inspired me to join the studio. Co-directing the first standalone online experience, one of our biggest efforts ever, is a dream. Can’t wait to reveal more of what this incredible team is building!”

Early this year, even the series creator Neil Druckmann had spoken about the project, stating, “You know there is a Last of Us multiplayer project that we’ve been working on for a long time, since even before The Last of Us Part 2 shipped. That’s the most ambitious project we’ve ever done, expanding the world even further, continuing to tell a story but in a multiplayer space, I won’t say too much about that.”
