This ongoing series on HBO Max is based on the 2013’s Game of the Year with the same name. Everyone is singing praises for this show. But that wasn’t the case initially, as everyone was skeptical about this show. There was genuine reasoning for having doubts about it. After all, many video game adaptations have failed to make an impression in the past.

However, things may change with this TV series adaptation. It has already broken numerous records, like the first episode having over 4.7 million viewers on the first day, making it the most-watched HBO series premiere since 2010. Nielsen has released other fascinating statistics which reveal this HBO adaptation rivals The Walking Dead.

The Last of Us rivals The Walking Dead as the most-streamed show

Nielsen revealed the Top 10 most streamed movies and shows in America from January 30 to February 5, 2023. The chart features The Last of Us at the fourth spot with 1.2 billion minutes in that week. The data further reveals that this show has a similar response to another post-apocalyptic show, The Walking Dead. Both these shows mostly attract a young and male audience.

However, Nielsen only showed the stats for viewership on HBO Max, meaning this information doesn’t represent the statistics of this post-apocalyptic show on HBO. Additionally, this data is only from Episode 4. There is a possibility that this HBO adaptation might have received an even better response for the latter episodes. It wouldn’t be surprising if the series matches the viewership number of the top three programs like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, You People, and New Amsterdam.

Aside from Nielsen, The Last of Us also has mind-blowing statistics on other platforms like Rotten Tomatoes. This show received a 96 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest ever for a live-action video game adaptation. The second live-action game adaptation to receive an exciting response was Werewolves Within, with an 86 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
